Metal ruler

Do yourself a favour and buy a steel ruler with both inch and centimetre markings on it.

 

Do not buy a plastic one. No, not even a half-plastic, half metal one, like I did. Sooner or later you'll leave the ruler lying on a sheet of clay (hopefully just scrap...) and the polymer will attack the plastic and turn everything into a sticky stringy mess.
